PETA Plus Launched Smashed Philippines on its 2nd Year

Smashed Philippines aims to reach more teens on the dangers of underage drinking.

In the Philippines, 70% of the population have consumed alcohol before the age of 14. Drinking alcohol at a very young age can lead to detrimental effects such as dropping out of school, getting into accidents, poor decision-making, adverse health conditions, and more, both in the short and long-term. To help combat this growing issue, PETA-Plus–previously called the PETA Theater Center–introduced Smashed in 2021.

Smashed, which is slang for intoxicated, is a global campaign led by Collingwood Learning and supported by global leader in beverage alcohol Diageo, designed to reduce the harm of underage alcohol drinking and peer pressure using an empowering arts-based approach.

STUDENTS ACROSS THE PHILIPPINES GET A DRAMATIC LESSON ON THE RISKS OF UNDERAGE DRINKING

  • The Power of Choice: Young people are made aware of underage drinking through theater.
  • Close to 18,000 students were enlightened about the harm of underage drinking through the Smashed pilot program.
  • Smashed unique theater-based learning approach to empower the youth on the harm and consequence of underage drinking.
  • Smashed aims to educate and empower 40,000 students in its second year.
Students from across the Philippines got a hard-hitting lesson on the risks associated with underage drinking as part of an award-winning international program, Smashed, that has reached over 1 million young people in 30 countries.Smashed is a global alcohol education and attitudinal change program being delivered in the Philippines by the PETA-Plus Program, an adjunct business expansion unit of the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA). Originally developed by Collingwood Learning in the UK, and supported by Diageo, Smashed was created in collaboration with young people and combines drama with interactive workshops to help them understand the facts, causes, and consequences of underage drinking. The Philippine project started in September 2022 and was delivered online.

To sustain its efforts in alcohol education using an arts-based approach, Smashed Philippines is launching its second year of programming. For education and capacity building, the Smashed team will be hopping from school to school, to conduct the website workshops face-to-face for NCR schools and online for areas outside NCR. This will be followed by a webinar series on alcohol education for teachers and young people which will happen in September, December 2022, and February 2023.

Four partner schools will also participate in a live theater-in-education performance of Smashed - Prevention of Underage Drinking. Smashed Philippines will implement online website sessions, assemblies, alignment meetings for coordinators, and a year-end evaluation to strengthen partnerships with existing networks, and engage with more institutions. Online promos and mini-games will be launched on its digital platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Tiktok. An online essay-writing and video-making competition for young people will be launched from March to April 2023.

Through these activities, Smashed aims to emphasize the importance of young people’s participation in making positive choices and empowered decisions. All in all, Smashed Philippines continues its mission to be at the forefront of alcohol education in the country through positivity, empowerment, and improvement. It proves to be a potent and useful way to enhance existing curricula across local schools in an interactively creative way.
