After ending her toxic relationship with her boyfriend Ben, 40-year-old
Alice discovers she is pregnant. With her age and current relationship
status, her first instinct is to have the pregnancy terminated. As her
body undergoes dramatic changes, Alice struggles and needs to decide
what to do. Will she slide back into the arms of Ben? What will this
mean for the child growing inside her?
12 weeks is a deep and relevant film. It has a lot of inner layers
of message in the film. It says a lot on women empowerment, choices and
struggles. The film distinctly portrays the different struggles of women
in terms of motherhood, family, career and personal anatomy. Max
Eigenmann gave a brilliant performance with her subtle approach and just
nuances on her character. She
quite literally brought her character well in this film. The screenplay
is clear and well presented. The integration of social
commentary and detailed character study of the lead is so good and
crafted as a clear narrative in the film. Kudos to the whole team. The
premise is very sensitive but I love how it was tackled without
preaching. It just lets you understand the path chosen by the character.
In the end it is above love, trauma and how you live your life. 12
Weeks is definitely a topnotch and must see on Cinemalaya 2022.
My Verdict: 5/5
