The kontrabidas are finally taking center stage in Netflix’s latest satirical comedy, Kontrabida Academy. During the media junket, lead stars Barbie Forteza and Eugene Domingo gamely shared how they found the balance between humor and fierceness in their roles—and the lasting lessons they learned from working together.
Balancing Comedy and Fierceness
When asked how they managed to be funny while still embracing the fierceness of a true kontrabida, both stars pointed to the brilliance of the film’s writing and direction.
Eugene Domingo explained:
“Being funny? The script is funny, so we just follow the script, because the script is really good. Hindi kaya ng artista lang. The script is everything. We just follow the script of Chris Martinez, and the script is complete, so there you go.”
Barbie Forteza echoed this:
“Yes, I have to agree with Ms. Eugene. It is really the combination of the brilliance of the script and the direction of Mr. Chris Martinez. Yun talaga—as in hindi ka mawawala ng landas eh, just follow him and the script, that’s it.”
Lessons They Learned from Each Other
The conversation then turned heartfelt (and playful), as the two kontrabidas-in-training reflected on the lessons they’ll carry from this project.
Barbie Forteza shared how much she admired Eugene’s professionalism and generosity:
“Siguro po ang natutunan ko po sa kanya is to show up. That’s the most important thing… I saw how Ms. Eugene juggled two, if not three, projects at the same time—different roles, different demands—and yet she never compromised. She’s always present, always giving, always generous. I learned that excuses have no place when you choose this path; you give your best no matter what.”
Eugene Domingo, in turn, highlighted what she gained from Barbie:
“Ang natutunan ko naman kay Barbie is that you have to trust the younger generation. You can’t be proud and say na mas marami kaming alam—it’s not true. If you have Barbie around, you will learn a lot. She’s very curious, she asks a lot of questions because she wants to deliver the right thing. Don’t be afraid to ask. Huwag mahihiyang magtanong.”
Of course, the exchange wasn’t without their signature wit, with Eugene joking that Barbie might as well be part of the press with all her questions—earning laughs from everyone present.
