Movie Review: Minamahal

Watching Minamahal felt like being transported back to my first love. AshDres delivered maximum kilig with their effortless chemistry, natural performances, and undeniable sweetness on screen.

The film tells the story of an introverted high school flower enthusiast who tries to win the heart of a love-hating visual artist by giving her flowers at key moments in her life. Their journey takes us through an on-and-off friendship and romance that begins in high school and continues into college, where the challenges of adulthood and reality start to unfold.

With Minamahal, director Jason Paul Laxamana has truly returned to form. The film perfectly captures the essence of a Gen Z first love story, tackling the joys, insecurities, and emotional struggles that today’s youth face when it comes to love. Its treatment feels fresh, modern, and incredibly relatable — one that young audiences will undoubtedly see themselves in.

What makes the film stand out is its clever use of flowers as a recurring motif. Each bloom is not just a prop, but a symbol of memory, emotion, or turning point in the characters’ relationship. This creative storytelling choice gives the narrative a poetic and heartfelt layer. The screenplay is sharp, thoughtful, and intelligent — a balance of lighthearted kilig and meaningful insight.

Of course, the highlight is the pairing of AshDres. Their chemistry is so natural it feels effortless, and this film finally cements them as a love team to watch. Andres Muhlach is irresistibly charming, exuding the aura of a true matinee idol in the making. Ashtine, on the other hand, shines with vulnerability and emotional depth; her performance feels raw, genuine, and deeply affecting. Together, they create moments that are not only heart-fluttering but also emotionally resonant.

Ultimately, Minamahal is more than just a teen romance. It is an updated Gen Z love story that is both sweet and realistic, a film that speaks to the young while allowing older viewers to relive the bittersweet memories of their own first love.

With Jason Paul Laxamana’s thoughtful direction and AshDres’ effortless chemistry, Minamahal is a smart, heartfelt, and kilig-filled romance that establishes AshDres as the new love team of this generation.

My Verdict: 4/5
