Dr. Carl Balita Productions teams up with the PHILIPPINE NURSES ASSOCIATION (PNA) to release the groundbreaking film about nurses entitled Sigio ng Kalinga in celebration of the 100 years of PNA.
Siglo ng Kalinga provides a closer look at the sacrifices of the nursing heroes who dedicated their lives to the Filipinos throughout the years. Loosely based on the life and works of the founder of the PNA Anastacia Giron Tupas, the film is directed by the award-winning filmmaker, LEMUEL C. LORCA, and written by ARCHIE DEL MUNDO.
The all-nurse cast film Siglo ng Kalinga by the award-winning filmmaker Lemuel Lorca, produced by Dr. Carl Balita Productions, had its world premiere on Monday, April 24, at SM Megamall's cinemas 2 and 3, respectively.
The momentous occasion was a gathering of VIPs and supporters of the advocacy film since its launch in October 2022--headed by its executive producer, Dr. Balita.
Dr. Balita is a nurse by profession, a multi-awarded entrepreneur, and a bestselling author. He’s the name behind the most successful, biggest, multi-awarded, and the only ISO 9001-2015 certified business of its kind, Carl E. Balita Review Center (CBRC).
Prominent figures in the nursing profession, members, and officers of the Philippine Nurses' Association (PNA) were all in attendance.
Siglo ng Kalinga is from the story and screenplay of Archie Del Mundo, inspired by the life story of PNA founder Anastacia Giron-Tupas and the heroic lives of Filipino nightingales. Another groundbreaking initiative of this film project was casting real-life nurses as actual actors.
The film is about three periods that will interconnect all the life experiences, work, advocacies, teachings, and learnings from Tupas through portions of flashbacks in 1922-1945-1959 while transposing her story into the lives of her modern-day contemporaries or counterparts.
Singing the official soundtrack of Siglo ng Kalinga--is the original Pop Diva, Ms. Kuh Ledesma, also a nurse. Ledesma sang with Dr. Balita in a duet for the song Walang Hanggang Kalinga.
The all-nurses cast included Joy Ras, Tads Obach, Bambi Rojas, Ellener Cruz, Joel Rey Carcasona, Aldrin Samson, Irma Bustamante, Jewell Alano, Abbey Romero, Anna Illescas, Lorrich Del Castilo, Denmark Mismanos, Aya Sarmiento, Jam Sandiego, Val Ramilo, Jerico Roque, and VJ Mendoza. Nursing leaders and luminaries, mostly deans and presidents of nursing schools and PNA officers, also played vital historical roles, such as Dr. Cora Anonuevo, Mila Llanes, Betty Merritt, Remedios Fernandez, Rita Tamse, Clare Curato, Frances Cuevas, Nerissa Gerial, and PNA National President Melvin Miranda.
Siglo ng Kalinga opens in cinemas nationwide on May 31.
Watch below as Carl Balita and director Lem Lorca Talk About Their Film - Siglo Ng Kalinga
Siglo ng Kalinga intersects the lives of two passionate nurses, Anna and Estacia, to the life of the Founder of the Philippine Nurses Association, Anastacia Giron Tupas (AGT), who defies all odds to advance the nursing conditions in the country during her time in the 1920s.
They, too, dedicated their lives to serving the nursing community despite personal struggles during their own time. Anna, coming from a poor neighborhood, strives hard to achieve better education that is otherwise not offered to many. Despite familial hurdles, she continues to uphold AGT's personal and professional values by serving her community as a nurse; holding on to the professional ideals of advancing the nursing standards in the Philippines.
Meanwhile, Estacia parallels the life and later years of AGT. Even after retiring as a dean of nursing, she still advocates for the improvement of the working conditions of healthcare professionals, and the communities they serve. She passes her torch to Anna who will continue her work as a nursing leader to future generations.
But how much of themselves should they give in the service of the country and the people? How much has changed a hundred years?
As we look back at AGT's images and ideals, her beginnings and experiences remain consistent in the present. Our health problems are a manifestation of societal ills, as we have the propensity to neglect the need to invest in the fundamentals of a productive and vibrant country.
Sigio ng Kalinga will take a closer look at the sacrifices the nursing heroes have provided the Filipinos throughout the years and how much more should be given for the betterment of the health sector.
