The lives of two Kapampangan families intertwine when an accident transpires between them. A shared suffering bonds these two families – just as equally as food bonds them together – as they navigate through guilt, anger, and ultimately, revenge.
Apag is a slow burn film that stays with you while watching. You
will root for the characters in the film as they face the journey of
forgiveness and redemption.
The film shines in its simplicity
and never feels like having grand statements but rather relies on subtled detailed character study.
It is a character-driven
film that examines the moral compass of the two families. Gladys Reyes
shines on her sincere and not over dramatic performance. Mercedes Cabral
performance is also noteworthy on her less is more acting style through
her eyes. Shaina Magdayao with her little exposure still shines in most
of her scenes. The ensemble cast from Coco Martin, Jaclyn Jose up to
Lito Lapid carries the whole film well, giving us a family oriented film
in time of the lenten season. Overall, this is Brillante Mendoza's
most emotional film to date. It is a beautifully acted ensemble and unsentimental film that never resorts to melodrama.
My Verdict: 4/5
