During
the lockdown, TOM (Jameson Blake), must face the feelings he's long
suppressed, when KENDRICK (Joao Constancia), his best friend from
college, returns from Hawaii and seeks to reconnect with him. Told
through the social media and online conference calls that we've grown
accustomed to during the pandemic, the film explores how once
broken relationships can be repaired even during these trying times.
My Lockdown Romance is timely and heartfelt that effectively use the social media and online video calls to tell this simple yet affecting story. Though shot entirely on smartphones and webcams, it never overshadows the emotional story line which deals with the tale of a young adult struggling with pandemic and rekindling past romance. The film’s ability to let the story and technical aesthetics go hand in hand smoothly is seen through it decent cinematography, screenplay and direction. Jameson Blake did a great job on portraying a closet gay role that do not put much effort on the looks and movement to become gay but invest on emotions and feels of his character. He shines on his nuances and underacting, were emotions are felt through his eyes and the way he speaks. Joao on the other hand is a revelation that shows strong hold of his character as the likable heartthrob guy that breaks Jameson's heart. We can not deny the fact that the two are pleasing to the eyes to watch together and have the handsome face in the entertainment industry so its nice to see them doing roles out of their comfort zone. Gab Pangilinan is effective as the girl best friend in this BL film. She is supportive, quirky and funny that add colors to the film. Overall, My Lockdown Romance is a touching, and sometimes funny BL film that let you experience roller coaster of emotion. It will make you laugh, feel the romance then breaks your heart.
My Verdict: 4/5
