Movie Review: Isang Himala

Isang Himala is a Philippine musical film adapted from the 2018 theatrical production Himala: Isang Musikal.

This musical film is a story about Elsa, a simple woman from the barrio Cupang. During an eclipse, she hears strange sounds calling her and telling her that she has been chosen by the Blessed Mother to heal the sick. When news about her ability to heal people spread, her small barrio became a pilgrimage site for people who wanted to be healed from their physical sickness. As more people believe in Elsa’s ability to heal, her relationship with her family and relatives and the people in the barrio change. The music and lyrics of the songs in the film gives life to the story about the difficulties, hope and unending questions of the people about life and true miracles.

Isang Himala is a powerful, poignant and heart-gripping film on faith and statement on our moral compass. It is a great homage and  truly an amazing, remarkable interpretation of a classic Filipino film. It showcases brilliant top-notch performances from the cast. Aicelle Santos shines with her subtle acting. Kakki Teodoro delivers an engaging performance. Neomi Gonzales shines with her touching performance. Bituin Escalnte is captivating. David Ezra justifies his role. The ensemble cast are delightful to watch. Some of the raw emotions are being delivered by its musical numbers and it works and transcends to the audience. Tears overflow from the audience after watching. Isang Himala is definitely a sweeping epic musical perfect in all aspects of its production. If you are a fan of a stage musical, you will definitely love this. Aside from its grand production, it is the message and statement of the film making this a relevant and quality film to watch in Metro Manila Film Festival 2024.

My Verdict: 4.5/5
