Movie Review: Cleaners

Cleaners is a coming-of-age anthology film about high school classroom cleaners for the school year 2007-2008. Set in the backdrop of a Catholic school in Tuguegarao City, the characters deal with different pressures of being clean, proper and pure while slowly discovering that the world is dirty and superficial to begin with. The different stories range from the taboo of shitting in school to navigating local political dynasties.

Kudos for this film to its unique storytelling, significant story, engaging screenplay and stylistic look for delivering a socially relevant issues of the youth. The use of non actors helps in capturing the authenticity of the film and watching this film is like going back to the roots of the original Filipino indie film way back in early 2000's. Its satirical comedy works not only bringing high school memories but also a message on realities, reflection of society and the mess left by the old generation that hopefully future generation will clean.  A good catch in this year's QCinema International film festival and one of the best Filipino youth oriented film in recent years that must be seen.

My Verdict: 4.5/5
