Movie Review: Clarita

Based on true events in the ’50s.  The films  is about the 18-year-old Clarita Villanueva. Her parents died when she was young and didn’t have an immediate family. So, she became a vagabond. In one evening, Manila police patrols saw a crowd surrounding Clarita as she roll down on the ground and screaming to keep something away from her.

On her accounts, invisible biting spirits held her down as they attack her. Nobody else tried to help her as teeth marks started to appear on her arms and neck. The police officers sprang forward and carried her as she scream and sob. Doctors suspected that she may have just took drugs or alcohol. Another doctor thought she was having an epileptic seizure. Later that night, she was taken to a cell and policemen ignored her pleas not to leave her alone.

Dark, twisted, and disturbing. It's almost impossible to truly put yourself in the shoes of those experiencing possession but Jodi Sta.Maria as a possessed girl nailed it.  Clarita is an effective thrilling exorcism film with unconventional narrative, significant cinematography and topnotch performance by Jodi Sta. Maria. Praise has to be given to every actor and actress, from Ricky Davao, Arron Villaflor up to the newcomer Alyssa Muhlach that acts like a pro. Clarita delivers  an interesting story through a well-built scary atmosphere. It resonates to our faith, reflection In life and self love. So if you’re a fan of horror film, Clarita is worth watching!

My Verdict:  4/5
