Jodi Sta. Maria Stars As A Possessed Girl In 'Clarita'

Jodi Sta. Maria  plays the title character Clarita, a possessed inmate in the first horror film of Black Sheep of ABS-CBN Films. The movie is based on true events in the ’50s.  It is about the 18-year-old Clarita Villanueva. Her parents died when she was young and didn’t have an immediate family. So, she became a vagabond. In one evening, Manila police patrols saw a crowd surrounding Clarita as she roll down on the ground and screaming to keep something away from her.
On her accounts, invisible biting spirits held her down as they attack her. Nobody else tried to help her as teeth marks started to appear on her arms and neck. The police officers sprang forward and carried her as she scream and sob. Doctors suspected that she may have just took drugs or alcohol. Another doctor thought she was having an epileptic seizure. Later that night, she was taken to a cell and policemen ignored her pleas not to leave her alone.

Jodi Sta. Maria has played several diverse roles, from a charming nanny to a revengeful mother, but she continues to surprise with her choice of projects. She feels this is her hardest role so far but finds it very rewarding.

The actress did her own research on Clarita whose story was told in different publications, even overseas. She didn’t know what to expect prior doing the movie. So, she was surprised to be doing most of the stunts by herself. One of the challenges she also encountered was speaking several foreign languages. They had a language coach on the set.

The movie’s horrifying trailer caught the attention of many netizens.

Aside from physically preparing for her role, Jodi armed herself with prayers. Jodi held on to God and to her faith as she claimed demons might use the movie to get to her.

Joining Jodi Sta. Maria in this film are Ricky Davao, Arron Villaflor, Romnick Sarmenta and Alyssa Muhlach.

Directed by Derick Cabrido, “Clarita” opens in cinemas on June 12.
