The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has released its classifications for several spine-tingling flicks and other films ahead of the Halloween long weekend.
Before movie-goers flock to cinemas to buy tickets, they should ensure the film's rating is suitable for their children, MTRCB Chair and CEO Lala Sotto said.
“Tiyak na mag-eenjoy ang mga pamilyang mahilig sa mga sineng katatakutan. Pero dapat ay may gabay pa rin ng mga magulang para siguradong naiintindihan ng mga bata ang kanilang pinapanood,” she said.
“App the Horror,” a South Korean horror film starring Kim Young-jae, Kim Ju-a and Yang Jo-ah, was rated R-13.
It has scenes of supernatural horror, frightening images, intense suspense, moderate bloody violence, paranormal activity and spirit possession. It will be exclusively shown in SM Cinemas.
Also rated R-13 was “Vampire Carnival,” a gothic horror flick featuring Nell Verlaque, Jason Isaacs and Kieron Moore.
It explores grief, emotional vulnerability and temptation. It also has strong language, brief nudity, sexual content, horror and violent scenes like bloody vampire attacks and supernatural characters and drug use.
“The film portrays risky encounters with strangers, drug use, and decisions influenced by seduction and emotional vulnerability. Immature viewers may not fully appreciate the dangers associated with these behaviors,” the MTRCB said.
Another horror film, “Crawlers,” received an R-13 rating for its strong bloody violence, gore, frightening horror scenes, strong language and brief sexual material. It stars Matilda Lutz, Gregg Sulkin and Melina Matthews and will be exclusively screened in SM Cinemas.
The Agency also released its ratings for two Filipino-produced movies.
“Red Crown,” a suspense thriller which stars Sanya Lopez, Michelle Dhee, Faith Da Silva, Az Martinez and Ashley Ortega, was rated R-16.
It has mature themes, strong language and graphic but non-gratuitous depiction of violence and gore.
“He’s Dating a Boldstar,” a Pinoy romantic comedy film featuring Joel Ravanera, Analyn Barro, Dominic Biong, Joshua Padigos, Bonn Earl Aquino, Nelson Nielo, Rob Sy, Leandro Baldemor, Aleck Bovick, Charles Temones and Maranatha Quevedo, got an R-13 rating.
It is a comedic, romantic and light dramatic film that explores the pursuit of dreams, the discovery of self-worth and making life choices.
Meanwhile, “Sense and Sensibility,” a romantic period drama starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esmé Creed-Miles and Caitríona Balfe, got a PG rating. It will be exclusively shown in Ayala Malls Cinemas.
It tackles “bereavement, inheritance inequality, financial insecurity, social expectations, romantic relationships, heartbreak and the challenges faced by women in a restrictive society.”
A G or General Audience rating means a film is suitable for all ages, while PG or Parental Guidance means a parent or guardian must be present to supervise younger viewers.
An R-13 means a film is suitable for viewers aged 13 and up, while an R-16 is for 16 years old and above. An R-18 is for adult audiences only.
