MTRCB approves ratings for 10 movies showing in cinemas this week

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has released its ratings for 10 motion pictures – including two Filipino-produced films – that will hit theaters this week.

MTRCB Chair and CEO Lala Sotto reminded parents and guardians to check the ratings of the upcoming films first before buying tickets for their children.

“Ang iba sa mga pelikula natin ngayong linggo ay rated PG hanggang R-18. Dapat ay siguraduhin natin na angkop ang panonooring sine sa antas ng pag-intindi ng ating mga anak,” she said.

“Masaya kami na kabilang sa 10 na movies natin ang dalawang gawang-Pinoy na sine. Inaanyayahan natin ang lahat na tangkilikin ang gawang atin,” Sotto added.

“Henry’s First Dates” is a Thai comedy starring Nicha Yontararak and will be exclusively shown in SM Cinemas.

A story of a globe-trotting woman dealing with a suitor suffering from memory loss, it was rated PG for its comedic situations and wholesome romance, which the MTRCB said will be “better appreciated by young viewers under supervision of responsible adults.”

The 2016 “La La Land,” a musical rom-com drama, received a PG rating and will be re-released for its 10th anniversary. It stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone and will be exclusively screened in Ayala Malls Cinemas.

The Japanese romance anime “You, Fireworks, and Our Promise” was also rated PG.  Featuring the voices of Shori Sato, Nanoka Hara, Rie Takahashi and Natsuko Yokosawa, it will be exclusively shown in SM Cinemas.

The Filipino-produced “The Fisher” starring Mon Confiado, Enchong Dee, Mercedes Cabral and Heaven Peralejo got an R-13 rating for its “mature themes of morality, responsibility, and the impact of one’s actions on a community and the environment.”

Another local movie, “Multwoh (Patay na Patay Sa’yo)” was rated R-13 for its comedic and horrifying elements and mature themes. It will be exclusively screened in Ayala Malls Cinemas.

The young adult movie features Sassa Gurl and Joao Constancia and is about same sex attraction and sexual awakening, with moderate strong language, brief provocative gestures and suggestive visual props.

“The Cycle,” a thriller starring Jeffrey Donovan, Deborah Ann Woll and Gretchen Corbett, also got an R-13 rating for its sustained horror elements, disturbing crime-scene imagery, supernatural violence, frightening sequences and mature thematic content.

“Backrooms: Everything Must Go” is an extended version of “Backrooms,” a psychological horror film and will be exclusively shown in Megaworld Cinemas. It was rated R-13 and features Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett and Lukita Maxwell.

The MTRCB said the movie “employs elements of science-fiction horror, mystery, suspense and psychological tension through the exploration of an unfamiliar and disorienting environment.”

“Hellhound,” a 2024 action thriller starring Louis Mandylor, Panya Yimmumphai and Vithaya Pansringarm, got an R-16 rating and will be exclusively screened in Megaworld Cinemas.

It contains graphic but non-gratuitous depiction of violence, torture, gore and bloody fight scenes that may be unsuitable for children below 16 years old.

The Chinese film “Once Upon A Time In the Middle East” was rated R-16 and will be exclusively shown in SM Cinemas.

It stars Sheng Teng, Qiming Jiang and Peter Daniel Adams and contains graphic but non-gratuitous depiction of violence and gore, as well as language and themes of terrorists exploiting and using children in their campaign of war.

“Stop! That! Train!” is a comedy disaster film starring RuPaul, Ginger Minj and Jujubee. It will be exclusively shown in Robinsons Movieworld with an R-16 rating.

The movie is a queer and gay adult comedy disaster that features sex talk, some nudity, seduction of a dead man, same sex kissing, some violent scenes featuring a repeated bloody face and a gory description of a child killed by a runaway train.

“Clayface,” a horror thriller featuring Tom Rhys Harries, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, got an R-18 rating.

It has themes of revenge, psychological deterioration, scientific experimentation, drug use, and imitable behavior on violence, self-harm and criminal acts.

“Pose,” a psychological thriller with James McAvoy in the lead, was rated R-18. It will be exclusively screened in Megaworld Cinemas.

A G or General Audience rating means a film is suitable for all ages, while PG or Parental Guidance means a parent or guardian must be present to supervise younger viewers.

An R-13 means a film is suitable for viewers aged 13 and up, while an R-16 is for 16 years old and above. An R-18 is for adult audiences only.
