Movie Review: The Unbreakable Boy

A young boy with both a rare brittle-bone disease and autism transforms everyone around him with his joyous, funny, and life-affirming world view.

It's not everyday we get to watch films that deal with human brittle bones disease and autism at the same time which is
the highlight of the movie, The Unbreakable Boy.

Written and directed by Jon Gunn and starring Zachary Levi, Meghann Fehy, with Gavin Warren, Patricia Heaton, and
Drew Powell with Jacob Laval as Austin LeRette our main boy in the film.

Based on a true family story and book adaptation, The Unbreakable Boy is a father's quest to make his son happy despite him having a genetic disorder called osteogenesis imperfecta which results in bones breaking easily. Zachary and Meghann played the parent's roles with might and conviction and you will feel their struggles, triumphs and pain alongside managing their personal conflicts on top of Austin's physical and mental conditions.

When the film was shot during late 2020's amidst lockdowns during the dreaded Covid19 pandemic, lead teen actor Jacob was only 12 and fast forward until film premiere in February 2025. His portrayal as autistic Austin was on pointe and so convincing that the real Austin LeRette admired and was proud of his work.

This film takes you through a rollercoaster of emotions that eventually dwells in a family and community's unconditional love to persons living with this kind of health challenge. The rest of the cast are loving and  endearing and you may want to watch out for the interesting character of "Joe" in the film.

The Unbreakable Boy also reminds us to appreciate life's best and happiest moments, to be grateful despite
"broken" problems that the universe may throw at you.

Don't forget to bring enough tissues to wipe those happy tears away.

The movie opens March 26, 2025 exclusively at Ayala Cinemas nationwide.

My Verdict: 3.5/5
