Movie Review: May-December-January

A May-December affair is challenging enough. What more if a third party, who means the world to them, enters the picture?

Andrea Del Rosario is Claire, a single mom and a career woman. She is aware that her son is gay and accepts this wholeheartedly. What breaks her heart, though, is finding out that they are both in love with the same man.

Gold Aceron plays 17-year-old Pol. His close relationship with his mother makes it easy for him to come out. What's tough is suppressing his feelings for his best friend and coming to terms with Migoy's love affair with Claire.

Kych Minemoto is Migoy who is very mature for his young age of 19. He can always consider Pol's home like his own, but he cannot look at Claire like his own mother. He proves her that his love and intentions are genuine and pure.

In this heart-wrenching love triangle, who will make the most sacrifice when family and friendship are at stake?

May-December-January is a much watched film with its beautiful message on love knows no gender and age. It is well written with is progressive dialogue and screenplay. The film is liberal and open minded that tackles issues that usually not feature in a mainstream full length film. The chemistry of the three leads are evident and each one of them justified their character well. Gold Aceron shines with his acting worthy performance from his nuances and depth of acting, you will root for his character and feel the emotion  that he likes to convey. Kych Minemoto delivers as the curious young man that fell in love with a woman ahead of his age. He has the potential to be a good actor to watch for. Andrea Del Rosario serves as the heart of the film as a loving mother giving a sensitive performance that is noteworthy. The cinematography and musical scoring matches the emotion of the film and helps to add layers to deliver an affecting film to watch to. The love scenes are done in good taste and well placed and integrated as an important essence of the film. The film is a roller coaster of emotion, it will make you fall in love, cry and relate at the same time.  Overall, May-December-January is one of the quality Filipino films to catch on the big screen.

My Verdict: 4/5
