Globe Studios actor wins coveted Volpi Cup at 78th Venice Film Festival

Globe Studios notched another feather in its ever-growing cap of international awards as multi-awarded actor John Arcilla took home the Volpi Cup and was hailed the “Best Actor” at the prestigious 78th Venice Film Festival.

Arcilla won the award for the Globe Studios and Reality Entertainment produced On the Job, an HBO Asia Original series. Arcilla plays a journalist in this crime-thriller who investigates the disappearance of his colleagues. On The Job is one of the first HBO Asia Original series from the Philippines and is currently streaming on HBO GO. It premiered last September 12 and will have a new episode every Sunday.

The award is a testament to Globe Studios’ flair for exceptional and world-class storytelling and affirms its commitment to develop bold and creator-focused content.

The motion picture boasts of an All-Star ensemble that includes Dennis Trillo, Christopher de Leon, Leo Martinez, Joey Marquez, Vandolph Quizon, Agot Isidro, Eric Fructuoso, and Soliman Cruz, among others. “On the Job” was directed by highly-acclaimed director Erik Matti and written by Michiko Yamamoto.

The film was the only Asian film selected for the Competition section. Reportedly, it enjoyed a five-minute standing ovation in its first showing in Venice, Italy.

Director Matti received the recognition for Arcilla, with the latter virtually delivering a heartfelt speech.

“I cannot put into words how I feel. This Volpi Cup is a milestone in my work as an actor. This is the most prestigious award I have received, and my cup of life has been so full of blessings. I wish I could share this with all my loved ones, including those who have already left us. My heart is outpouring with gratitude to all who loved me and inspired me to be where I am today. I thank God for putting them in my life,” Arcilla enthused.

The Volpi Cup is an internationally prestigious acting award from the oldest film festival in the world. Its winners include stars like George Clooney, Javier Bardem, Willem Dafoe and Brad Pitt. Alongside Arcilla, other nominees this year were Benedict Cumberbatch, Tim Roth and Oscar Isaac. Penelope Cruz won best actress.

On the Job is just the latest in a long line of Globe Studios films that distinguished international organizations have cited, highlighting the talent of Filipino artists.

Recently, another Globe Studios film, Whether the Weather is Fine, won the Cinema e Gioventu Prize (Youth Jury Prize) in the recent 74th Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland.

“We were so elated when it was announced that John won best actor, and even moreso when jury members Chloe Zhao and Bong Joon Ho came to talk to us about his performance. They marvelled at how he transformed as the movie progressed, and the many nuances of his performance. We’re so proud of him for putting Filipino artistry front and center on the global stage. His work and the work of many others, under Erik Matti’s guiding hand, just confirms what we’ve always known: Filipino content is world class.” said Quark Henares, Head of Globe Studios.
