Movie Review: The Gifted

Childhood best friends who are both geniuses in school eventually become bittersweet rivals for campus athlete Mark Ferrer. Zoe Tuazon is a rich, overweight and aggressive mestiza, while Aica Tabayoyong is a poor nerdy student with a bad case of teenage acne and nearsightedness. In an effort to outsmart and outclass each other, Zoe and Aica each undergo cosmetic surgery and become ravishing vixens engaged in ugly confrontations. 

I like how the film was written and executed. The film will give you a fresh take of a mainstream dark comedy local film. Well written and directed by the gifted screenwriter and director Chris Martinez.  Gusto ko purihin kung paano niya isinulat ang pelikula at iyong mga layer ng story kung paano niya ni reveal at dinistribute sa movie. I also like the out of the box and witty screenplay of the film. I like the flow of the film from the start till the end, no dull moment. Talagang kakapitan mo ang bawat eksena from the childhood of Zoe and Aika to highschool life up to adulthood.  Mahusay ang screenplay ng pelikula at nautilize iyong pagiging gifted nina Anne and Christine sa movie dahil may mga scene that showcase how gifted they are like the rubik’s cube painting and mechanical puzzle maze scene. Nagustuhan ko din kung paano binuo ni Chris Martinez yung 3 character na sina Mark, Aika and Zoey at kung paano umikot sa kanila yung story. 

Isa sa aabangan sa pelikula ang pagiging campy nito iyong rivalry between Anne and Christine and ofcourse the manhood of Sam Milby. Anne’s character here is very different aside from being the gifted she is egoistic, bitch and crazy. Opposite naman si Christine na good vibes pa sweet at may puso. So the two of them justified their role.
Pero mas lumutang si Anne for this film dahil sa  dynamics ng kanyang character at bagay na bagay sa kanya yung role of being a sophisticated woman. Nabother lang ako sa acting ni Christine sa reconciliation scene nila ni Anne na para bang pilit na pilit na nahihirapan siya while si Anne naman na napakasubtle into character and yet effective.  Doon lang naman sa scene na iyon but all throughout Christine is good. Sam’s character is also to watch out for as he will show something new on this film especially on the high school timeline of the film.  I also think that this film will be a box office hit and will earn more than 100M based sa dami ng audience when I watch this. Nagulat din ako sa reception ng mga tao na nagpalakpakan after ng film on a regular screening na madalang sa isang mainstream film so this confirms na nagustuhan ng mga tao ang napanood nila at naniniwala ako na may nakita silang BAGO at KAKAIBA sa pelikulang ito. And before I forget huwag kayo agad umalis ng sinehan pag labas ng credit dahil after nito andun ang major pasabog ng pelikula! So just watch out for it..

So I hope Chris Martinez will continue to give us fresh concept and stories in film.  I can say na forte niya ang comedy dahil ganito din yung treatment na binigay niya sa Here Comes The Bride and remake of Temptation Island. May kakaiba at sarili siyang style sa paggawa ng pelikula na alam mo na mula sa isang tao na malaro iyong utak. I recommend people to watch this film because this is not the usual local comedy film. Overall nagustuhan ko iyong film and I can say that this is the best mainstream film that I watch so far for this year.
