Neophyte ’26: A Timely Film on Youth, Justice, and the Dangers of Hazing

From L-R: Director Rommel Penesa, Jon Lucas, Elle Villanueva, Derrick Monasterio, Angelica Jones

A successful block screening was recently held for the upcoming film Neophyte ’26, starring Derick Monasterio, Elle Villanueva, Angelica Jones, and Jon Lucas. The cast also made their presence felt at the event, showing their support for a project that carries a meaningful and socially relevant message.

More than just a dramatic film, Neophyte ’26 aims to shed light on the realities of hazing and to strengthen awareness of the Anti-Hazing Law in schools. In the Philippines, the Anti-Hazing Act was created to protect students from violence and abuse often linked to initiation rites in fraternities and organizations. Despite legal measures, hazing remains a serious issue, making films like this an important reminder of the need for vigilance, education, and accountability among the youth.

At the center of the story is Ned, played by Derick Monasterio, a young man who faces life-changing challenges as he navigates friendship, loyalty, and justice. Jon Lucas takes on the role of Jaco, the fraternity leader and Ned’s close friend—who later becomes his rival not only in principle but also in love, as both characters are connected to Yani, portrayed by Elle Villanueva.

Adding emotional depth to the story is Nelia, Ned’s loving mother, played by Angelica Jones. Her character represents the strength and unconditional love of a parent willing to endure pain and sacrifice for her child. Through her performance, viewers are reminded of the emotional toll tragedies can leave on families.

The film explores intense themes of struggle, heartbreak, sacrifice, and the pursuit of justice. It presents the painful realities faced by young people caught in dangerous situations, while also highlighting the courage it takes to stand for what is right.

During our interview, Derick Monasterio shared how meaningful his role in Neophyte ’26 is to him because of the film’s strong message about the value of education and the harmful effects of hazing on the youth. He also mentioned that he still convincingly fits the role of a student, and even joked that both he and his real-life girlfriend, Elle Villanueva, enjoyed portraying students again since it had been a while since they last took on such roles.

Jon Lucas proves effective as the film’s antagonist, delivering a performance that will surely make audiences react strongly against his character. Meanwhile, Angelica Jones delivers one of the film’s standout performances, bringing heartfelt emotion and authenticity to her role as a devoted mother.

While Neophyte ’26 tells a simple and relatable story, its message is what gives it weight. It is a film that students can connect with and one that parents will deeply feel. With its relevant theme and emotional storytelling, it serves as both entertainment and a wake-up call.
