Movie Review: Unravel

The story follows Lucy (Padilla), a company executive, who, despite having a successful career, suffers from clinical depression. Feeling like she has already reached a dead end, Lucy decides to fly to Switzerland, where physician-assisted suicide is legal, even for foreigners.

But after enlisting for the procedure, Lucy meets Noah (Anderson), a fellow Filipino whose goal is to make people see the good in life. Their blossoming friendship eventually makes Lucy reconsider her plan.

Unravel is a beautiful portrait of a journey of two people finding the worth of life. It is a 108-minute affair that takes us to a picturesque country of Switzerland that serves as the third main character of the film. The script is naturally poetic and the cinematography will awes you while watching as you would like to go in that country. Gerald and Kylie that serve as the anchor of the film deliver a fine performance that fully immerse themselves into their onscreen character.  They are the Ying and Yang of each other. Kylie in this film gave her heartfelt performance while Gerald is a convincing and a lovely leading man for this film that you would like to have in your life. Unravel is the best film so far of RC Delos Reyes and he shows here that meaningful stories can be told with the minimalist productions, poetic dialogue, vast landscape shots and strategic use of music. The theme song of the film "Wherever You Will Go" adds a beautiful layer to the message of the film.
Unravel is a decently poignant film with a message that was delivered not in a preachy way. So if you want to watch a different kind of Filipino film about reflection in life with a romantic story on the side, Unravel is a good catch.

My Verdict: 4/5
