My Verdict for Metro Manila Film Festival 2023

Movie Review: Rewind

This romance drama film is about a man who at a certain point in his life feels guilty of his life choices. All these after not being promoted in his work, being estranged from his father and son and a having a rocky marriage and then his wife dies in a car accident. One day he meets a man who offers him a once-in-a-lifetime deal — to rewind his life and correct all his mistakes and repair his relationship with his wife and family on one condition — he has to die in place of his wife. He believes the man to be Jesus. With everything to lose and to hope for, John rewinds his life and discovers that the true meaning of happiness comes from the thing he has taken for granted: LOVE.

Movie Review: When I Met You In Tokyo

This romance film tells a story about unconditional love, sacrifices, sufferings, age, and aging. It is about a "dedicated and devotedly in love with each other" Filipino elderly couple and their courageous end of life journeys. Joey is an OFW permanent resident of Japan who is wounded and traumatized by his ex-wife's betrayal. He promised himself never to love again but things changed when he met Azon, who is also an OFW and a permanent resident in Japan who will make him believe to give love another shot, only to discover after only a few years of a happy blissful marriage that Azon is dealing with an age-related debilitating disease that will surely break Joey's heart once more.

Movie Review: Becky and Badette

The film is a heartwarming comedy about friendship and second chances. It charts about the struggles of Becky and Badette, two high school best friends, who in their mid-40s, are still struggling to make ends meet but they never lose hope in their dream of one day becoming famous celebrities. In their high school reunion, they are reluctant to tell people that they have amounted to nothing and fabricate the most incredible lies about themselves, becoming the target of envious people, particularly a former schoolmate who is mean and refuses to see them succeed. Adding to the conflict is the re-emergence of the incredibly charming and smooth-talking Pepe, who broke both their hearts in high school. Soon Becky and Badette find themselves entangled in a love triangle, competing against each other for Pepe's love and attention. Are they risking their friendship for a man that could burn them both?

Movie Review: Family of Two

The film revolves around a worried son who seeks to find a man as a partner for his single mother.  Maricar (Sharon Cuneta) lost her husband when her son Mateo or Matty (Alden Richards) was only five years old and she has raised him as a single mom doing various jobs.

Now, Matty is 28 years old, works in an advertising company, and has asked her mom to stop working as he feels it’s his turn to serve her. Maricar is happy just attending to the needs of her son and tending to her plants.

Matty gets attracted to his immediate boss, Zari (Miles Ocampo), but he cannot freely express his feelings for her. Planning to move to Singapore with his girlfriend, Mateo seeks to find a new partner for his mother.

Movie Review: Penduko

Penduko follows the story of Pedro, a young man skilled with mythical and supernatural powers, which he and his father, Apo Tisot, inherited from their ancestors. But unlike Apo Tisot (John Arcilla), who uses his gift to help the poor and sick, Pedro has other plans for himself.

After cutting ties with his father and leaving his hometown, Pedro moves to the city to follow his dreams, but so far, Pedro has yet to find a way to do odd jobs here and there to make ends meet, completely wasting his gift and potential.

But all that changes when a secret organization owned by Gat Blanco (Albert Martinez) hears about his skill and offers him a job as an albularyo agent. As Pedro works for the organization, he further hones his talent, which impresses many but also makes others jealous.

Then, out of nowhere, a powerful force of evil appears and endangers the lives of many, forcing Pedro to put the good of others before him.

Movie Review: Firefly

Firefly is about a young boy that is order to fulfill a promise to his mother, he searches for the mythical island described in her bedtime stories, a place where one can make any wish upon seeing the light of a thousand fireflies. The story begins with the adult Tonton being interviewed by a skeptical journalist after winning the National Book Award. The interview unravels the origin of his stories: Set in 1999 and told through Tonton’s rose-colored memories of life with his mother – a vintage storybook.

One story in particular sticks with Tonton. The story goes: Once upon a time in a mythical island, a brave firefly mustered all its light and defeated a vicious dog to protect his butterfly friend. To encourage Tonton, Elay tells him that the island is real and that you could make a wish if you ever made it there. In an old notebook, Elay draws a map to the island. And Tonton had taken his mother's words literally: that he must make the journey to the island like they promised. On the road, he meets three strangers who will either help him or hinder his quest…
