Filmmaker Emille Joson: A Vision Ahead of It's Time

Meet the new filmmaker on the rise.  She's more than just a beauty..

Some movies have dominate generations, while others stand out as light-years ahead. It’s not uncommon for some films to be underappreciated and then later be dug up as cult classics in a time when audiences better understand them especially those with empowering themes and messages that are still relevant today. Meet the stunning award-winning filmmaker Emille Joson who captured the hearts of many male fans and now gotten the attention of international film critics too. Including some Hollywood big stars that ended up following her on social media, and celebrated her work. All thanks to major streaming resurgence of her 12 year old campy horror short film "Adivino" in the wake of #MeToo Movement during pandemic. It tells a story of a con-artist woman who got haunted by her own fraud. But before the short film took western countries by storm. It was banned in Catholic Schools during it's first release due to it's strong theme and controversial villain. But inspite of rejections, it received numerous accolades including the 37th Metro Manila Film Festival (Best Student Short Film) that opened doors for Joson in the film industry. Since then the filmmaker began having a reputation for writing satirical gritty stories. A filmmaker who is not shy away for talking about social issues that might be uncomfortable for vicious people and those who wronged her. She scribe her films like how Taylor Swift penned down revenge songs.

Joson was also part of some critically acclaimed indie films like Ivan Payawal's The Comeback with Kaye Abad, and Ice Idanan's Sakaling Hindi Makarating with Alessandra De Rossi and Jc Santos. Her 2012 written screenplay intl. debut film Pagari: Mohammad+Abdullah starring Teejay Marquez under Robby Taroza's production is also a gritty total pack of suspense and well-received by the critics. Joson adresses topical issues that hasn't been bluntly done in a Filipino teen genre ever before such as school bullying, realistic adolescent trauma, homophobia, toxic masculinity, identity crisis, matured languages and toxic upbringings. The film was called blunt classic ahead of Netflix show's 13 of Reasons Why and Elite. She also uses her school violence experience at Dear Jesus Montessori School as an inspiration for it. Teejay Marquez received acting nomination from PMPC Star Awards for Movies for his portrayal in the film.

Aside from Adivino, Joson also got hidden gem short films that ages well today. My Second Mom starring the multi-awarded actress Mercedes Cabral opossite her niece Daniela Marie Barlan. Another one was the dark doomed-romance Kim Legaspi's Fervent Wish with Goin' Bulilit star Trina Legaspi where Joson co-wrote the story. It was also a huge hit on Viddsee streaming site. Thanks to her sleeper hit cause now we know she's the filmmaker we never knew we needed.
