Julia Barretto takes on the role of a sex worker named Candy, while Carlo Aquino
breathes life into the character of a school teacher, a virgin, who
becomes her client. He meets and falls in love with
Candy, but the complexity of her job and his status in
life cause conflict in what would otherwise be an ordinary love story.
Expensive
Candy is a sentimental film with a story grounded in the reality of one
social status. Tears overflowed with the convincing performance of Carlo
Aquino and Julia Barretto. Julia's character let us peek into the world
of modern prostitution in which she gave nuance and affecting
performance. She shows the inner side of her character and
this is the most mature of her performances to date. Carlo on the other
side proves that he is still one of the finest and underrated actors of
his generation. His performance here is so subtle, simple and
relatable. The film is well written with an unpredictable screenplay and
not common in a Filipino romantic movie.
Just don't forget to bring tissues inside the cinema as this film will surely break your heart.
It is also beautifully photographed that brings us to the seedy side of
world of prostitution and unfamiliar places in Pampanga. The soundtrack
is a bonus with the LSS song of Alamat, Sa Panaginip Na Lang, that adds a
layer to the beautiful story of the film. Expensive Candy offers few surprises with good performance from its leads and is thoroughly romantic without being heavy-handed about it.
My Verdict: 4/5
