Movie Review: Mia

Mia is a romantic comedy film about a doctor Mia Salazar (Garcia) and a nerdy forester Jay Policarpio (Guzman). Jay, who transforms mined-out land into rainforests, pursues the self-destructive alcoholic, Mia, who recently joined the government’s Doctor To The Barrios program to heal from the tragedy of her fiance’s death. Showing that conflict sometimes belies an undercurrent of passion, Mia and Jay’s occasional clashes soon create compelling chemistry between them.

Mia stand out in its unique storytelling that break out of the norm. It is a story of self heal with creative narrative which I think first time to seen in Filipino film. The film succeed in integrating a love story, environmental issues and self love. The unique  character of EA and Colleen, a natural earth lover and an alcoholic subtle depressed are interesting to watch as the story unfolds. The chemistry of the two are evidently seen on the film with their remarkable performance that definitely nailed and justify their characters. Mia is a film that showcase the acting prowess of Coleen Garcia and proves once again that she is not only a beautiful face but definitely can act. EA on the other hand supports Coleen and give way and as always a reliable actor that adds color to the film. Mia is a film driven by complex characters and their relationship with each other. The film offers a quiet and subtle funny moments and emotional depth that is so natural that makes this film more powerful and effective. With its original treatment and interesting subject matter, Mia is a decent local film as an opening salvo for 2020.

My Verdict: 3.5/5
