"Can We Still Be Friends?" is centered on Digs – a no fuss, no frills kind of guy – and idealistic achiever Sam who are friends turned lovers turned exes. Their relationship as a couple lasted for almost eight years until they both decided on an amicable breakup.
As they face the dating world separately, the ex-couple consistently check on each other under the guise of “friendship.” This turns into a competition on who will find a new relationship first only to find out that one of them is still in love with the other.
Driven by the vibrant chemistry between Gerald Anderson and Arci Muñoz, Can We Still Be Friends? is an honest look of young adults falling in love then having a breakup. The movie is charming and funny having a decent combination of mainstream and a touch of indie feels. Though challenge with its story telling, the film's strength is its realistic dialogue and relatable characters that gave me the impression that this story definitely occurred at some time or another. I also like its stylish cinematography that mirrors the emotion of the lead characters. Can We Still Be Friends? is a witty and perceptive view of modern love story that is so refreshing to see on a silver screen.
My Verdict: 3.5/5
