Star Cinema closes the second quarter of the year with Can We Still
Be Friends – the biggest romantic movie of the season, starring Gerald Anderson and Arci Munoz.
Directed by Prime Cruz from a screenplay written by Jen Chuaunsu, Can
We Still Be Friends is a love story that celebrates the indomitable
millennial spirit as it attempts to ask the proverbial question, can
exes really be friends?
The movie is centered on Digs (Anderson) – a no fuss, no frills kind
of guy – and idealistic achiever Sam (Muñoz) who are friends turned
lovers turned exes. Their relationship as a couple lasted for almost
eight years until they both decided on an amicable breakup. As they face
the dating world separately, the ex-couple consistently check on each
other under the guise of “friendship.” This turn into a competition on
who will find a new relationship first only to find out that one of them
is still in love with the other.
It should be noted that this is the much-awaited and grand movie
comeback of Team Lablab after their 2016 blockbuster hit Always Be My
Maybe. With such notable works as The Manananggal Unit
23B and Sleepless under this belt, Can We Still Be Friends also marks
the directorial debut of Cruz for Star Cinema.
The movie is Anderson’s return to the big screen since the
back-to-back success of Always Be My Maybe and How To Be Yours in 2016.
With his daily series Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin, Gerald Anderson, who
recently celebrated over a decade of being one of the most accomplished
young actors of ABS-CBN, is rightfully anointed as Star Cinema’s
millennial leading man as he effortlessly embodies the definition of how
to be handsome, successful, fresh, hip, young, and very talented rolled
in one.
Muñoz, on the other hand, is one of the sexiest young actresses in
the industry. Also recently tagged as the hottest bachelorette in the
business, she epitomizes the archetypal sexy rom-com leading lady –
someone who exudes sensuality but is brilliantly comedic and very
identifiable to fans at the same time.
Together, Anderson and Muñoz breathe life on the universally
relatable characters of Digs and Sam to perfection in this timely love
story that explores how current art forms and sensibilities, along with
modern technology, such as dating apps like Tinder and Laundromat,
greatly affect the millennial community in dealing with their
relationships.
What will really become of Digs and Sam after they broke-up with each
other? When is an ex really an ex? Can exes be a couple again?
Can We Still Be Friends also assembles a remarkable millennial supporting cast led by Bryan Santos, Ria Atayde, Brian Sy, Gege Severo, Erika Padilla, Markie Stroem, and Emmanuelle Vera.
Can We Still Be Friends hits theaters nationwide on June 14.
