Sci-fi, action adventure, rom-com flicks, concert live viewings get MTRCB ratings

Film buffs have a wide array to choose from as the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) released its ratings for several sci-fi, action-adventure, and romantic comedy movies as well as live viewing of concerts that will hit theaters in the first week of November.

Classifications for the upcoming flicks range from PG (Parental Guidance) to R-16, MTRCB Chair and CEO Lala Sotto said.

“Buhay na naman ang takilya nitong weekend dahil maraming mapagpipilian ang ating mga manonood. Paalaala lang, i-check muna natin ang rating para siguradong pwede rin ang sineng napupusuan para sa mga batang kasama sa panonood,” she said.

“Buddy,” a Filipino-produced film starring Michael de Mesa, Benjie Paras, EA Guzman, Elijah Canlas, Elisse Joson, Empoy Marquez and Shaira Diaz, got a PG rating for its “family drama of mature content.”

“The film explores family relationships, parental responsibility, emotional neglect, trust, forgiveness and the importance of communication within the household. These themes may encourage meaningful family discussion,” the MTRCB said.

“Godzilla Minus Zero,” the 39th feature in the Godzilla franchise, was also rated PG for its minimal and non-graphic depiction of violence and suffering and themes. It features Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe.

Based on the Indian epic, “Ramayana: Rise of a Legend” will be exclusively screened in SM Cinemas with a PG rating. Its cast includes Ranbir Kapoor, Ravi Dubey, Sai Pallavi and Sunny Deol.

The Agency issued a “strong caution” to parents that some sequences of violence and action may be inappropriate for younger children, and that the film “contains mythological themes involving war, vengeance, sacrifice, and destiny, with strong action, battle scenes, peril and some bloody images.”

Featuring the voices of Bill Hader, America Ferrera and Xochiti Gomez, “The Cat in the Hat” was also rated PG. It is based on the popular children’s book by Dr. Seuss and is an “epic fun (mis)adventure with mild animated action, peril, mischief and mayhem.”

“EXO PLANET #6 - EXhOrizon [dot],” a live viewing of the South Korean-Chinese boy band’s concert on November 8, also received a PG rating.

“Stray Kids World Tour,” a live viewing of the South Korean boy band’s concert on November 7, was rated PG. It will be exclusively shown in SM Cinemas.

A South Korean psychological thriller, “Paradise Lost” was rated R-13 for its thematic elements like kidnapping, murder and suicide. It stars Kim Hyun-joo.

“Wicker,” a romantic comedy starring Alexander Skarsgard, Olivia Colman and Elizabeth Debicki, was assigned an R-13 rating for its “discreet, infrequent, brief and non-graphic depictions of sexual activity, strong language and absurd humor.” It will be exclusively shown in SM Cinemas.

Meanwhile, “Hellhound,” a 2024 action movie featuring Louis Mandylor, Panya Yimmumphai and Vithaya Pansringarm, was rated R-16 for its graphic but non-gratuitous depiction of violence and gore. It will be exclusively screened in Megaworld Cinemas.

A G or General Audience rating means a film is suitable for all ages, while PG or Parental Guidance means a parent or guardian must be present to supervise younger viewers.

An R-13 means a film is suitable for viewers aged 13 and up, while an R-16 is for 16 years old and above. An R-18 is for adult audiences only.
