PELÍCULA Spanish Film Festival Returns to Makati for its 24th Edition

Film lovers are in for a cultural treat this October as Instituto Cervantes’ PELÍCULA>PELIKULA Spanish Film Festival makes its highly anticipated comeback to Makati. Now on its 24th year, the festival will run from October 10 to 16, 2025, bringing a rich showcase of Spanish, Latin American, and Filipino cinema to Ayala Triangle Gardens and Power Plant Mall.

Since its launch in 2002, PELÍCULA has grown into the biggest Spanish film festival in Asia, offering audiences a chance to experience acclaimed films that highlight diverse voices and stories. For 2025, more than 20 titles will be screened, ranging from drama and documentary to animation.

The festival kicks off on October 10 at Ayala Triangle Gardens with the screening of El 47 (Marcel Barrena, 2024). Other highlights include Soy Nevenka (Icíar Bollaín, 2024) and Nosotros (Helena Taberna, 2024); documentaries like Un hombre libre (Laura Hojman, 2024) and La guitarra flamenca de Yerai Cortés (C. Tangara, 2024); and animated gems such as Mariposas negras (David Baute, 2024) and Robotia (Diego Cagide and Diego Lucero, 2024).

Beyond Spain, the lineup also features outstanding films from Latin America: Argentina’s Por tu bien (Axel Monsú, 2024), Brazil’s Até que a música pare (Cristiane Oliveira, 2023), Uruguay’s Becho (José Infantozzi, 2024), and Peru’s Reinas (Klaudia Reynicke, 2024). Filipino short films will be celebrated too, with a special program titled En corto, screening on October 16.

A festival favorite also returns this year — the Audience Choice Award, where moviegoers vote for their favorite film after each screening. The winning film will be announced and re-screened at the closing ceremony on October 16 at Power Plant Cinema 6.

Special Events and Activities

PELÍCULA isn’t just about screenings. On October 11, film buffs can enjoy Cine Maratón at Ayala Triangle Gardens, an all-day showcase of films including Dalia y el libro rojo, Tasio, Solos en la noche, and Reinas. Running from 11:45 a.m. to 11 p.m., it promises an outdoor cinematic experience under the stars.

Families with kids will also find activities lined up. On the same day, Instituto Cervantes will host creative workshops for children, encouraging them to explore their imagination through crafts and games. Meanwhile, on October 12, before the screening of Robotia at Power Plant Cinema 6, children can join a raffle for a chance to win footballs and a Real Madrid jersey signed by football legend Emilio Butragueño.

A Celebration of Culture and Collaboration

PELÍCULA>PELIKULA 2025 is organized by Instituto Cervantes in Manila, with the support of the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines, AECID, the Film Development Council of the Philippines, and numerous local and international cultural partners.

Best of all, all screenings are free, with films presented in their original language and subtitled in English — making the festival accessible to everyone.
