Movie Review: Balota

A teacher pays an increasingly steep price for defending the democratic process of the election.

During the 2007 elections, a former sexy star and a land-grabbing tycoon are in a tight race for mayor. Emmy, a strict yet popular teacher in a small town, is assigned to the Board of Election Inspectors for her local precinct. When violence erupts, she runs into the forest with a ballot box containing the last copy of the election results. Armed only with her resourcefulness, courage and wit, she tries to outmaneuver the goons who want the elections to fail. Her loved ones and community are caught in the crossfire as she pays an increasingly steep price for defending the democratic process.

Balota is fun and relevant to watch at the same time.  It perfectly captures the harsh reality of electing a politician in the Philippines, making it a relatable and emotional ride for viewers. You will feel a roller coaster of emotion while watching this, as it seems like you are following your typical neighborhood in time of election. Marian Rivera gave her best performance in this film who embodies a loving mother, dedicated teacher and a principled citizen. You will definitely cheer, embrace and love her character for this film. Will Ashley is a discovery in this film and a promising young actor to watch. Esnyr and Sassa Gurl are definitely the breathers of this film but still significant characters to reflect on. The ensemble cast are noteworthy to mention in this film for bringing life to their character from Donna Cariaga, Royce Cabrera, Joel Saracho, up to Gardo Versoza and Mae Paner. The film's ability to balance serious themes with comedic moments is impressive, making it an engaging watch.  With its subtle exploration of social issues, Balota is a mirror of life in our current society, inviting viewers to interpret the message in their own way. Overall, the film is a great choice for those who want to be entertained while also reflecting on the state of our society.

My Verdict:  5/5
