Movie Review: Ang Duyan ng Magiting

Jose, a student, leaves his mother a letter to inform her that he’s leaving home to learn why people decide to join the underground movement. His decision reaches Michael, the chancellor of the university where he studies. Michael invites Jose’s professor, Victor, to his home to ask him if he had anything to do with Jose’s decision. They get into a heated argument and Victor’s principles and courage are put in question. After a few days, news reaches Victor that Jose is missing; rumored to have been executed by the renegade Police Chief, Gabriel Ventura. Victor sees this as an opportunity for him to prove his principles about nationalism and patriotism. He plots to murder Gabriel as a means to provide justice for Jose.

Ang Duyan ng Magiting shines with its solid screenplay and outstanding performance from its ensemble cast. It got an important message to tell about the social injustice in our country and an eye opening about the current political statement in our society. It got a creative treatment in screenplay that feels like watching a theater play in a film. The acting is solid from Dolly De Leon to Paolo O’Hara, Miggy Jimenez that serves as the heart of the film, he gave a heartfelt performance and he proves in this film his acting prowess. Bituin Escalante, Agot Isidro and Jojit Lorenzo performance are also finely crafted with their delivery of lines that is full of conviction. So if you want to watch a relevant film in Cinemalaya 2023, watch Ang Duyan ng Magiting.

My Verdict: 4.5/5
