Rabid is an anthology film that probes into our everyday reality of
anxiety, uncertainty and paranoia. It features distinct but interwoven
stories that revolve around the different ways this world can drive us
human beings to the brink of madness.
Rabid shines for being bizarre, on point and interesting. I like the film
as it is not the typical Filipino horror film that you have seen
before. It is well executed and provides a quirky horror story during a
pandemic which is an interesting subject matter. It also features stars
that we do not usually see to lead in a film like Cheska Diaz, Vance
Larena, Ayeesha Cervantes and Donna
Cariaga. All of them are good in their characters. Ayesha is refreshing to see. She is new but stands out on the episode "Shit Happens". Donna Cariaga is also good on the "HM" episode. My personal favorite among the four would be the third episode, Shit Happens, it is the most entertaining, near to the usual Filipino horror flick but this one has the spunk and crazy twist. Next would be the first episode, Kami Lang Ba Pwede Malasin, due to its original content and I think this is the first time I've seen this kind of a home invasion Filipino film with an unexpected twist. The last episode, HM, is also good in the way it tackles the current pandemic situation and of course with a twist. I also love the style, look and execution of this episode. The second episode, Iba Pa Rin Ang Karne, is more of an experimental and indie treatment in approach but the intention was decently delivered. Rabid is timely, a social commentary, and a lot of messages to tell but not preachy. Rabid is one of the out of the box films I've seen recently and it's good that Erik Matti and his team are able to provide us with this kind of film.
