The film revolves around the family of husband and wife Arturo (Arcilla) and Rebecca Fajardo (Cuneta). Their son Luis, portrayed by newcomer Kent Gonzales returns to their old house with a dark past to unravel the true reason behind the death of his twin Manuela (played by Kent’s real-life sister Pam) who mysteriously died on the second week of Lent. Luis is forced to consult with a psychic to uncover the mystery of Manuela’s death and comes face-to face with the family home’s dark history.
Kuwaresma is a well made extreme Pinoy horror film and the best that I've seen in recent years. The horror in this film will linger to you even after leaving the cinema. With its effective milieu, Kuwaresma takes all the unholiest of attitudes towards horror and amplifies them to compound scares.
Newbie young actor Kent Gonzales is truly indeed a promising actor to watch out for that shine on this film with his breakout performance that deserves an acting nod. Sharon Cuneta attack her character well with brilliant performance. Kudos to her for doing this challenging film that test her acting prowess. You will see many firsts of Sharon Cuneta on this film that she only did for Kuwaresma. John Arcilla was really fucking scary. He embrace his character well and act effectively. Guila Alvarez and Pam Gonzales performance are also noteworthy that both plays vital roles in this film.
The look, atmosphere, cinematography and production design of Kuwaresma are excellent! It helps the film to tell the story and deliver its message. Overall production value of Kuwaresma from acting, story up to its technical (sound, scoring, cinematography) is really worth your time to catch this on big screen. Do not watch this film alone as you need someone to share the scare to and have a conversation after watching for you to discuss what really happened in the film. I can say that this is one of best Filipino films of 2019 so far, so if you're a fan of pinoy horror film, you should watch Kuwaresma.
